Potala Palace

The Potala Palace is among the favorite tourist attractions in China that draws regular visitors. Located atop the Marpo Ri hill that lies at an altitude of 130-meters above the Lhasa valley, the Potala Palace in Tibet is quite famous.

Many legends are associated with the Potala Palace. According to a common legend there was a sacred cave at the spot where the Potala Palace is located that was the abode of Avilokiteshvara who was a Bodhisattva. It is believed that in the later years Emperor Songtsen Gampo used the cave for meditation and later constructed a palace in the region.

It is believed that this palatial mansion stood on the hilltop till the 17th century and was later integrated into other buildings.

Potala Palace as it stands today was constructed under the aegis of the Dalai Lama in the year 1648. Explore the massive prayer halls and chapels located within the walls of the Potala Palace. Visit the Chogyal Drubphuk, Phakpa Lhakhang and the tombs of the different Dalai Lama's located within the massive Potala Palace.
