Location
Taiwan is an island located off the coast of the Chinese
mainland, south of Japan.
History
Available archaeological records suggest that Taiwan was a
flourishing town almost as far back as 10,000 B.C. The year 1517
has special historical significance for Taiwan, as it was then that
a group of Portuguese sailors discovered Taiwan and named Formosa.
The Dutch annexed Taiwan in 1624. After several years of political
turmoil Taiwan in China became a part of the Manchu Kingdom.
Taiwan became a part of Japan in 1895 after China lost to Japan in
war. Taiwan again became a part of China after the Japanese defeat
in the Second World War.
