The capital of People's Republic of China, Beijing is an
important city in China. Beijing is located in the north of the
country and boasts of many wonderful tourist places. Beijing is the
political, business and cultural hub of the country. Beijing has
the history that dates back to some 3000 years. Also known as the
birthplace of Chinese Civilization, Beijing was the capital of
several dynasties in the past.
Administered directly by the Central Government, Beijing
occupies an area of 16,800 square kilometres. Beijing is the seat
of Chinese Government, where various central government offices and
embassies are located. Beijing is also the nerve centre of Chinese
economy. It is the second largest city in China.
Places to See
Tian'anmen Square: A major landmark in Beijing,
Tian'anmen Square is located in the center of Beijing. Tian'anmen
is the largest city square in the world, which covers an area of
440,000 square metres and can hold up to one million people. The
square has various monuments, which tourists visit on their tour of
Tian'anmen. The flag hoisting is an important ceremony at
Tian'anmen Square.
Temple of Heaven: It is another important tourist
attraction in Beijing. The Temple of Heaven was built in 1420 and
it was the place where Ming and Qing monarchs used to pray for good
harvests. Popular spots in the Temple of Heaven include Hall of
Prayer of Good Harvest, Imperial Vault of Heaven and Circular
Altar.
Forbidden City: Built during 1406-1420, the Forbidden
City was the imperial palace of Ming and Qing. It covers an area of
720,000 square-metre and is the largest existing palatial complex
in China. There are various tourist attractions in the palatial
complex, which include Imperial Garden and Nine-Dragon Screen
Wall.
Great Wall of China: This is the most popular tourist
attraction in China. The Great Wall of China was constructed to
ward off invasion of China from the outside world. The construction
of the wall is believed to have begun in 221 BC and continued till
the 17th century. The Great Wall of China can be visited either by
travelling 56 km north of Beijing or by travelling 120 km west of
the capital.
