Location
Located 3,760 meters above the Lhasa River level, Lhasa lies

Chengdu. Lhasa gained importance in the 15th century after the
Gelug Monastic sect established the Drepung, Gandan and Sera
monasteries in this part of Tibet. In fact according to ancient
legend it was Yarlung and not Lhasa that was the main religious
center of the Tibetan Buddhists, though in the later years Lhasa
gained importance as the capital city of Tibet.
History
Available historical records indicate that Lhasa was established
in the year 633 A.D. during the rule of emperor Songtsen Gampo.
